Rev. Dr. Bruce Nevin Alick is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior while in fourth grade. By the time he reached eleventh grade, and one month before his 17th birthday, Dr. Alick was licensed to preach at the Gibson Temple Baptist Church in Philadelphia. The date was September 12, 1971, and the late Rev. Albert W. Swift was pastor. In 1974, Dr. Alick joined the Vine Memorial Baptist Church and served as Youth Minister under the late Rev. Dr. Leonard George Carr. Dr. Alick was ordained on November 20, 1985 at Vine Memorial where the Rev. Dr. James S. Allen serves as pastor, and as his father-in-the-ministry.

Dr. Alick received his early education in the Philadelphia public school system, graduating from Simon Gratz High School in 1972. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree (with honors) in Religion and Philosophy at Bishop College of Dallas, Texas in 1981. He attended Princeton Theological Seminary as a candidate for the Master of Divinity degree. After completing the school year, Dr. Alick transferred to the Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia where he received his Master of Divinity degree in 1987. He received his Doctor of Ministry degree (May, 2000) at the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. His dissertation was entitled, “Empowering an African-American Congregation through the Development of a Computer Literacy Program.” During the summer of 2001, Dr. Alick was accepted into the Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dr. Alick was also the recipient of a scholarship from Harvard Divinity School in order to attend the Summer Leadership Institute.

In January of 1986, Dr. Alick was called to serve as pastor of the New Springfield Baptist Church of Siloam, Georgia. He served in that capacity until March of 1992. On March 1, 1992, Dr. Alick began serving as Pastor of the historic Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Germantown (founded in 1871). Dr. Alick is an instructor in the School of Christian Ministry at Palmer Theological Seminary (formerly, Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary). He has taught in the Minister’s Division and the Old Testament Department of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education. He currently serves as a lecturer in the Youth Department (15 – 18 year olds) and for the 2006 Congress in Baltimore, MD, was asked to teach the Foreign Mission class. Dr. Alick also serves as an instructor in the Pennsylvania Baptist Congress of Christian Education. He has served as an instructor at various churches throughout the tri – state area (PA/NJ/DE). Dr. Alick has lectured and preached in the Pennsylvania Baptist State Convention where he served as Vice President of the Eastern region. He has served as the Editor of the Mission
Herald, which is published by the Foreign Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc.

In 2004, Dr. Alick made two trips to southern Africa as part of a fact finding team commissioned by President Shaw that had the responsibility of assessing how the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc., could integrate an HIV/AIDS ministry into its mission work in Sub-Saharan Africa. The team traveled to Swaziland, the Republic of South Africa, Malawi, and Lesotho. In 2006, Dr. Alick traveled to Kenya and Somalia to monitor the progress on a joint tsunami relief effort sponsored by the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention and the Foreign Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. In June of 2006, Dr. Alick traveled to Venice, Rovigo, and Verona, Italy as part of a preaching and teaching team from the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention. The team led, by Rev. Corey Johnson, had been invited by the Italian Baptist Union (IBU) and the African Immigrant Pastors of the IBU.

Dr. Alick has been the recipient of various awards. Among them are Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities (1981 edition); The National Dean’s List (1982-83 edition); Outstanding Young Men of America (1984); Benjamin E. Mays Fellowship for Ministry (1981-1984). In 2002, Dr. Alick was one of three recipients of the Hobart C. Jackson award for Outstanding Community Service by the Inter – Alumni Council of the United Negro College Fund.

Dr. Alick is an avid reader, a movie buff, a “Trekkie” (he loves Star Trek), and a music lover (from Handel to Motown to Marsalis). He is a chess enthusiast and enjoys surfing the ‘Net with his laptop computer. Dr. Alick is married to the former Kare L. Hayes, and they are the proud parents of three children (Candice, Daniel, and Sethian), a daughter-in-law (Nicole), and three grandchildren (DaJour, Bethany, and Dominic).
